GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University head men’s basketball coach Donte’ Jackson announced the 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule on Friday, which features trips to three Big 12 schools and to compete in the inaugural Chris Paul HBCU Classic.
“We are excited about the many tests our 2021-22 schedule presents,” Jackson said. “As usual, we will play an extremely competitive non-conference schedule with several Power 6 teams, such as Texas Tech, Iowa State, UConn and TCU, that will prepare for our conference schedule. This year we were selected to play in the Boost Mobile HBCU Challenge presented by Chris Paul. This challenge includes two games two of the top MEAC teams. As always, we are excited about a competitive SWAC conference schedule, especially with the addition of FAMU and BCU to the league.”
Grambling State went 12-12 overall last season and 9-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Tigers won three out of their last four games, falling to Prairie View A&M in the SWAC Tournament semifinals.
GSU opens the season with four straight road games, beginning on Nov. 9 against Grand Canyon. The Tigers will visit Texas Tech (Nov. 12), New Mexico (Nov. 15) and Iowa State (Nov. 21), before playing its first home on Wednesday, Nov. 24 against Iowa State.
Grambling State takes to the road to compete in the Inaugural Boost Mobile HBCU Challenge, hosted by Chris Paul, Nov. 28-29 in Phoenix, Ariz. GSU opens play in the tournament against Morgan State and will conclude with a matchup against Norfolk State.
The Tigers open the month of December with a home contest against Jarvis Christian on Dec. 2, but will play the next five games on the road.
GSU wraps up the second month of the season with road tilts against UConn (Dec. 4), Incarnate Word (Dec. 11), UAB (Dec. 14), Tulane (Dec. 19) and TCU (Dec. 21).
Grambling State opens the new year and the SWAC portion of its schedule on Jan. 3 and 5 against Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern, respectively, at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
The Tigers travel to SWAC newcomers Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M on Jan. 8 and 10, followed by three straight home games against Southern (Jan. 15), Mississippi Valley State (Jan. 22) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Jan. 24).
GSU concludes the month of January with back-to-back road games against Jackson State (Jan. 29) and Alcorn State (Jan. 31).
Grambling State opens February with home games against Alabama State (Feb. 5) and Alabama A&M (Feb. 7), followed by road trips to Texas Southern (Feb. 12), Prairie View A&M (Feb. 14) and Southern (Feb. 19).
The Tigers conclude the month of February with home contests against Florida A&M (Feb. 26) and Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 28) and will wrap up regular season play with road swings to Alabama A&M (March 3) and Alabama State (March 5).
The SWAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament is set for March 9-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
